Arnold Manaaki Wilson was the first Māori to graduate in sculpture from the Elam School of Fine Art at the University of Auckland. He received his honours diploma in1955, and went on to a distinguished career in art education. In the 1950s Wilson began exploring traditional Māori concerns through a manner that was new to Māori art.
