Theo Schoon
Untitled (Mud) 4

Artwork Detail
Theo Schoon was both painter and photographer. He used abstraction to strip the scene of extraneous details, and focus on the subtle effects of light, colour and texture of mud pools in various states of viscosity. The photographs contrast those of a tourist, which capture a spectator’s superficial glance. It is the unexpected – a detail, a texture or a fleeting patterncaused by a mud pool bubble bursting – that Schoon looked for while photographing.
