(typed, attached to mount, l.c.) National Mutual Life Building, Shortland Street, 1882.. Keals and Sons, architects.. Shortland Street was once the main throughfare of Auckland, leading from the landing place to the Government offices in Princes Street. This building, scheduled for early demolition, was designed as a warehouse for Archibald. Clark on the site of the city's first two-storeyed shops. Notice how its lower neighbours echo the curved form at the centre of the roof balustrading..
