This print is described as a masterpiece of Blake's oeuvre as an engraver. The swirling lines and dramatic contrasts of light and dark lead us from God to the dark tumbling figure of Satan and his evil followers as they descend once more to the fires of Hell. Job and his family draw back as if a hot wind is passing them, leading our gaze back past the hovering angels to the heavenly realm once more. Like so many of his prints, the Book of Job derived from initial watercolours that Blake made on the same theme. (Monsters and Maidens, 2004)
