Evelyn Page
Portrait of Denis Glover

Artwork Detail
Evelyn Page knew the poet Denis Glover from the period before WWII when both lived in Christchurch. This portrait, painted several decades later, was executed at Glover’s home in Paekakariki.
Charles Brasch, a friend of both, wrote of it ‘Denis my dear old warrior, How are you? I had one glimpse of you in Eve’s portrait, and if the report’s even half true you’re still sound as a bell and dangling your toes in the sea; though the beard is a decoration that disguises you rather.’ (Intimate Portraits, 2005)
