Esk Redoubt Thames

Esk Redoubt Thames by Colour Sergeant Ladd

Artwork Detail

Colour Sergeant Arthur Ladd was a member of the 2nd Battalion 18th Royal Irish. See the supplement to Auckland Weekly News 29 September 1899.

"An interesting addition to the Old Colonists' Museum was made yesterday by Mr. Thomas Ennes, of the 18th Royal Irish Regiment, consisting of a painting of tho Esk Redoubt. Thames, built in 1863. The painting was the work of Colour-Sergeant Ladd, of the Irish Regiment, and many were the difficulties he met with in trying to obtain the necessary artists' materials. Auckland was searched bv the men coming up on leave, and it was only after long and persistent effort that sufficient paint was obtained for Sergeant Ladd to complete his picture."
