Landscape with Peasants

Landscape with Peasants by Hendrik Mommers

Artwork Detail

Mommers worked in Rome before 1647 and joined the local guild for Dutch painters, before returning to Haarlem. Mommers combines classical ruins in an idyllic Italian landscape with the intimacy of country people selling vegetables, who seem to have stepped out of a Flemish genre painting. The landscape is tamed for the most part, and given over to growing the produce we see in the foreground.
