Ema Tavola
Artwork Detail
Ema Tavola’s Colour Me Fiji series reinterprets the traditional Fijian sulu as being articles of urban south Auckland streetwear that riff on the mixture of traditional visual symbols on-sourced in Fiji. Rather than taking an ironic touristical approach, she turns the familiar into the culturally affirming by locating their relevance within a community.
