Milan Mrkusich
Landscape
Artwork Detail
Milan Mrkusich is one of the first New Zealand artists to paint in an entirely abstract style. Colour and abstraction are central to the artist's work. We are not, here, presented with a landscape of a particular place, but rather with a bright and lyrical grid of colour that pulses with vibrating tones. Mrkusich, during the 1950s, explored the optical and conceptual possibilities of pure abstraction.
