Charles F Goldie
La Femme au Bain

Artwork Detail
When studying in Paris in the 1890s Goldie made copies of works in the Louvre. In 1897 he made this copy of a painting by René Prinet in the Luxembourg collection. In terms of composition there are also close links to Degas’ The Morning Bath, c1892-95, although the latter’s handling is more impressionistic. Every brushstroke in Degas’ painting is visible, and the light falls evenly over the whole canvas, whereas Goldie’s tones are more muted, the brushstrokes blended to create a sfumato effect.
