Boy Shame

Edith Amituanai’s early photography was characterised by private interiors and scenes of domesticity that reveal much about her subjects’ customs and identities in a broader cultural context. Inspired by her Sāmoan heritage and life in Auckland, Amituanai first focused her camera lens on her community to create works including 'The House of Tiatia' and 'The House of Manu', 2007 that are intimate and particular. In her recent series 'The End of My Driveway', 2011, a re-imagining of traditional street photography, Amituanai presents candid portraits of a young generation of Aucklanders. Taken from the end of her driveway, the series shows the interface between public and private spaces while speaking of Auckland’s shifting demographics.

Edith Amituanai graduated from Unitec Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Design (Photography) in 2005. She was the inaugural winner of the Marti Friedlander Photography Award in 2007 and the youngest artist to feature in the book Contemporary New Zealand Photographers, a major survey of art photography published in 2005. Her photographs have been included in a number of high-profile group exhibitions including 'Le Folauga' (2007) and 'Dateline: Contemporary Art from the Pacific' (2007).
