Artwork Detail
Tanu Gago grew up seeing representations of his culture that were not created by Pacific people and bore little resemblance to his life experience. Closing the gap between mainstream perceptions of ‘the Pacific experience’ and his social and cultural reality is a driving force behind Gago’s artistic practice.
‘As a South Auckland resident, raised in Mangere and currently living in Papatoetoe, it has been important to reflect the social and cultural environments that help to inform the identity building of young Pacific males.’
