Wheeler and Son operated an important photographic business in Christchurch from 1877 to 1912, which specialised in scenic views of New Zealand, especially of the South Island. They regularly presented their work in public exhibitions. While known for their landscape prints, they also produced a significant number of carte de visite portraits of Canterbury people.
