If the first etching in this series is characterised by the confidence of Ajax, the last demonstrates his despair. As the strongest surviving Greek warrior at the end of the war, he was to be awarded Achilles’ armour made by the god Hephaistos. Cheated by the intervention of the Gods, it passed instead to Odysseus, leaving Ajax filled with fury. He later killed himself in shame. (Southern Myths, 2005)
