After completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Ilam School of Fine Arts, Canterbury University, in 1991, Chris Heaphy spent time exhibiting and practising in Aotearoa New Zealand before completing a Master of Fine Arts at RMIT University, Melbourne, in 1998. He received the Olivia Spencer Bower Fellowship in 1995.
Incorporating symbols, signs and anamorphic figures inspired by everyday objects, pop art and traditional Māori rock drawings, Heaphy’s paintings traverse cultural divides to explore concepts relating to culture and identity.
