- Biography
- Milli Jannides, born 1986 in Sydney, grew up in Tāmaki Makaurau. She graduated from Auckland’s Elam School of Fine Arts in 2009. Jannides has studied at Glasgow School of Art (2007), Kunstakademie Dusseldorf (2010), and in 2013 completed her MFA at Royal College of the Arts in London. Since graduating, Jannides has based her studio in Europe, first in Porto, Portugal and more recently in Stockholm, Sweden. She has undertaken two residencies in Mexico City in 2014 and 2015. Jannides was recipient of the David Villiers Award in 2012 and a Laurie Coon Foundation Painting Scholarship in 2008.
Jannides’s practice is deeply entwined in her passion for literature, with her current reading material often guiding her painting. Using indirect translation of textual inspirations, mood and memory converge in visual allegories, signs, and symbols. With titles often alluding to deeper narratives, Jannides’s paintings transport the viewer to new psychological landscapes.
