Welcome to the latest family-friendly installation in the Todd Foundation Creative Learning Centre.

‘Once Upon a Time in Art invites you to explore the world of symbols to create your own meaning and stories – you also can transform yourself into a character and frame you and family as a painting come to life,’ says Martin Langdon, Family Programmer at Auckland Art Gallery.

The installation draws on the Gallery’s collection of historical painting in the Mackelvie Gallery exhibitions to unravel the secret codes in the symbols and characters used by visual storytellers of the past, and provides new meanings for a contemporary audience.

Explore weird and wonderful objects from Junk and Disorderly, draw your own symbols and pictures to install onto a salon-style magnetic wall display, and create your own character by dressing up, performing then post photographs of yourself in one of our framed painted worlds on Instagram.
