Gottfried Lindauer (1839–1926, Pilsen, Czech Republic) was already an established artist before arriving as an assisted migrant in New Zealand, with his profession listed as gardener. Thankfully he chose art over gardening in his new home, building a highly successful career painting portraits of Māori and Pākehā.
Lindauer became one of the most prolific portrait painters of the late 19th and early 20th century in New Zealand. Discover the man behind the portraits including how photography influenced his work, who his subjects were and more in this free exhibition.
