Event detail

If you’re looking for a lower-stimulation environment to explore the Gallery, join us every Tuesday from 3pm to 5pm for relaxed hours.

During relaxed hours, the Gallery offers a calmer environment for visitors who prefer less-crowded galleries, lower sensory stimulation and quiet spaces to pause. Our friendly Gallery team are available to help, and extra accessibility resources are available at the front desk.

Relaxed hours are open to all and are suitable to anyone who feels more comfortable visiting the Gallery with less stressors. This may include disabled visitors, neurodivergent visitors, people with sensory needs, and whānau or support people.

What to expect

During your visit, you can:

  • borrow accessibility items from our trolley, including ear defenders, hidden disabilities sunflower lanyards and sensory items

  • check signs outside each space to see what sensory elements you may expect

  • ask our Gallery team for support or directions at any time

  • visit the library on the mezzanine floor, where you’ll find a chill space with beanbags, calming sound and softer light

Read our social story before you visit the Gallery for detailed descriptions and photographs about what to expect during your visit.

  • tono rauemi āwhina mai i tā mātou tōneke, tae atu ki ngā paretaringa, ngā taura puarā sunflower mō ngā whaikahatanga muna, me ngā taputapu tairongo
