Event detail

Discover the life and legacy of Pablo Picasso in Picasso: A Rebel in Paris, a documentary that takes you on a journey through Paris, exploring the artist's extraordinary rise from a young struggling artist to one of the most influential figures in 20th-century art.

Directed by Simona Risi and created to mark the 50th anniversary of Picasso's death, the documentary takes you inside the Musée national Picasso-Paris, home to the world's largest collection of Picasso's work. Through archival materials and insights from art experts, discover the people, places and experiences that shaped his artistic journey, alongside the contradictions and complexities of his life and his enduring influence on modern art.

Presented alongside Picasso: Designed by Paul Smith at the Gallery, this special film screening offers an opportunity to explore Picasso’s story beyond the artworks and gain a deeper understanding of the artist behind the exhibition.

Please arrive early and ensure you are seated by 12pm, ready for the film screening to begin. This film has a run time of 93 minutes.

Seating is limited, so book now to secure your place.

About the exhibition

Picasso: Designed by Paul Smith

Picasso like you’ve never seen him before. Encounter the Blue and Rose periods, Cubism, portraits and more in the first solo exhibition of Picasso’s work in Aotearoa New Zealand in more than 30 years.

Bringing together outstanding works from the Musée national Picasso–Paris in a special collaboration with legendary British fashion designer Sir Paul Smith, the exhibition unfolds across atmospheric rooms that draw on the colours, shapes, patterns and textures of Picasso's artworks. Smith’s experiments with light, colour, shape, feeling and his Signature Stripe reimagine how we experience the artworks.
