Event detail

Create your own Cubist-style prints in this gel printing workshop, drawing inspiration from works in the exhibition Picasso: Designed by Paul Smith.

Artists Steve Bolton and Stacey Edgar will demonstrate gel plate monoprint techniques, then guide you to make your own prints. During the session you will explore layering colour, collage and use mark-making tools to create different impressions and textures.

By the end of the workshop, you’ll have three A3 prints to take home, each reflecting your personal touch and creativity.

This workshop is suitable for all experience levels. All you need is an interest in exploring and learning new techniques in a supportive environment. We provide all materials. You are welcome to bring your own gel block.

The workshop will take place in the Gallery’s art studio, with space for 20 participants.

About the exhibition

Picasso: Designed by Paul Smith

Picasso like you’ve never seen him before. Encounter the Blue and Rose periods, Cubism, portraits and more in the first solo exhibition of Picasso’s work in Aotearoa New Zealand in more than 30 years.

Bringing together outstanding works from the Musée national Picasso–Paris in a special collaboration with legendary British fashion designer Sir Paul Smith, the exhibition unfolds across atmospheric rooms that draw on the colours, shapes, patterns and textures of Picasso's artworks. Smith’s experiments with light, colour, shape, feeling and his Signature Stripe reimagine how we experience the artworks.
