Event detail
To mark Te Rā Tuku Whenua (the gift of land) on 18 September, join our Poumatua and Head of Kaupapa Māori Joe Pihema (Ngāti Whātua), for a talk exploring this important moment in the history of Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. This day marks the start of the city we know today.
Joe will share kōrero about his tūpuna and others linked to Te Rā Tuku Whenua, including Te Hira Te Kawau and his father paramount chief of Ngāti Whātua ki Tāmaki, Apihai Te Kawau who gifted whenua (land) to Governor Hobson.
This kōrero will be in English with kupu Māori (words) used throughout.
The talk is free, but spaces are limited. Please book to avoid disappointment.

Joe Pihema
I whai tūranga a Joe Pihema (Ngāti Whātua) ki Toi o Tāmaki i te mutunga o te tau 2023. He nui āna mahi hei kaipupuri hītori o te iwi, hei mātanga reo Māori, hei pou tikanga anō hoki mō Ngāti Whātua. Neke atu i te 25 tau ia e mahi ana i roto i te ao mātauranga Māori, i te ao pāpāho Māori, i roto hoki i ngā rāngai ahurea me ngā tuku ihotanga.
Ko Joe te Kaiwhakahaere Tuarua me te Kairauhī o ngā Kohinga i Te Whare Taonga o te Tairāwhiti mai i te tau 1998 ki te tau 2004, he mema hoki ia o Te Papa National Services’ Bicultural Committee. He mema o mua ia o te Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei Trust Board me te Tūpuna Maunga o Tāmaki Makaurau Authority. I tēnei wā, he mema ia o te Taumata ā-Iwi o Tāmaki Paenga Hira.
About the speaker
Joe Pihema
Joe Pihema (Ngāti Whātua) joined Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki at the end of 2023. He has a long standing background as a tribal historian, te reo Māori expert and senior tikanga adviser to Ngāti Whātua. He has worked in Māori education for more than 25 years, as well as in Māori broadcasting and the cultural and heritage sectors.
Joe was deputy director and curator of collections at Tairāwhiti Museum from 1998 to 2004, and a member of Te Papa National Services’ Bicultural Committee. He is a former member of the Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei Trust Board and Tūpuna Maunga o Tāmaki Makaurau Authority. He is currently a member of the Auckland War Memorial Museum Tāmaki Paenga Hira Taumata ā Iwi.
