Color Cry

Archive Collection Detail

'Color Cry' is Lye's first American film. It is camera-less and uses the shadowgraph technique with the artist placing textiles and stencils directly onto film strips. Lye's film includes the haunting blues number sung by Sonny Terry 'Fox Hunt', to evoke the distress caused by a lynch mob as they chase down a fleeing slave.

This is one of a series of Len Lye films reprinted by the National Film Unit to form part of the 1980 Auckland Art Gallery exhibition ‘Len Lye: A Personal Mythology’.
