Rongopai Conservation Report and Diary

Rongopai Conservation Report and Diary

Archive Collection Detail

In November 1967 a group from Auckland City Art Gallery went to the Rongopai wharenui (meeting house) in Waituhi to view the building that was in disrepair by that time. Gallery director Gil Docking (1919-2015) and conservator Les Lloyd (1915-2001) were joined by heritage architect John Stacpoole (1919-2018) and painter/ writer Alan Taylor (1933-2016).

This archive consists of the condition report prepared by Lloyd that includes eleven photographic prints of the whare and the diary written by Taylor about the visit and his subsequent writings on the topic of the restoration of the innovatively painted meeting house.
