Frances Hodgkins Bound Letters 1875-1946 (Transcripts)

Archive Collection Detail

In the 1950s art historian Dr Eric Hall McCormick (1906-1995) was given access to the family archives of expatriate New Zealand painter Frances Hodgkins (1869-1947). Over a number of years he transcribed her letters, and it is likely that this bound set was given to Hodgkins' nephew Peter Field (1905-1992) by McCormick. Field gave the set to Dunbar Russell Sloane (1942-2017) in 1986 and the volumes were made available at his eponymous Wellington auction house until donated to Auckland Art Gallery via curator and Hodgkins scholar, Mary Kisler.

There are six volumes of transcribed letters arranged chronologically from 1875-1946.
