Linda Gill Research Papers on Frances Hodgkins

Linda Gill Research Papers on Frances Hodgkins

Archive Collection Detail

Linda Gill (born 1937) is an art writer and historian who has also published books on her travels, taught French and written poetry. For over three decades she has been interested in the art and biography of the expatriate New Zealand painter Frances Hodgkins (1869-1947). Through her friendship with art historian Dr E H McCormick (1906-1995) she began a multi-year project to edit the artist’s letters, resulting in the publishing, in 1993, of 'Letters of Frances Hodgkins'.

This archive consists of Gill’s research on Hodgkins gathered from the late 1980s until 2013. As well as notes, ephemera, publications and correspondence there are around seven hundred annotated subject index cards and much photographic material both on Hodgkins and her work. Deposited in 2020 are a set of the photocopied transcriptions of the letters of Frances Hodgkins, with annotations and notes by Dr E H McCormick and Linda Gill.
