Roger Collins Frances Hodgkins Postcard Collection

Roger Collins Frances Hodgkins Postcard Collection

Archive Collection Detail

This is a collection of over 300 postcards from France and Morocco pertaining to the New Zealand artist Frances Hodgkins. They were collected by Hodgkins scholar and academic, Dr Roger Collins, whose aim was to find images contemporaneous to Hodgkins' visits to those places. They date from circa 1900 to circa 1940 and were collected by Dr Collins from the 1980s until 2010.

To make his selection, Dr Collins referenced the letters of Hodgkins that are to be found edited in a collection by Linda Gill, at the Alexander Turnbull Library and in other repositories such as the archives at Tate Britain.

He purchased the cards from many localities, sometimes using dealers but also attending postcard fairs or travelling to the actual places depicted.
