VAANA (Visual Artists Against Nuclear Arms) Archive

Archive Collection Detail

Visual Artists Against Nuclear Arms (VAANA) formed in mid 1984 to raise public awareness and to support fellow peace groups through their art. The group produced cards, stamps, logos and posters, contributed to peace diaries and painted pro peace/ anti-nuclear street murals on the same site in Auckland. Members also sent art works to two international visual arts peace exhibitions. This archive was created at the time of the unveiling of the third VAANA mural on the corner of Ponsonby and Karangahape Roads, Auckland, March 2009. Among the contents are an invitation to the event, a catalogue of the art works and several CDs. These CDs are of the artwork, information panels and visual documentation of the launches of all three murals in in 1985, 2006 and 2009. We have also received relevant pages from the notebook of artist Jill Carter-Hansen relating to the 1985 mural and the artists she worked alongside.
