Pukapuka mo nga Manuhiri Tangata Matakit[a]ki [Visitors Book Lindauer Art Gallery]

Archive Collection Detail

In 1874, the painter Gottfried Lindauer (1839-1926) met businessman, Henry Edward Partridge who became his major patron. Māori who attended the "Lindauer Gallery" above Partridge's business in Queen Street, Auckland, recorded their comments in this visitors book upon viewing the portraits of their ancestors. In 1913 Partridge moved his collection to the Auckland Art Gallery for display and this publication was donated alongside with it, and continued to be used in its new location. In 1915, Partridge gifted his collection of Lindauer paintings to the people of Auckland upon the successful subscription of ten thousand pounds for a relief fund to benefit Belgians affected by the War.
