Seung Yul Oh: SOOM

 —

exhibition Details

SOOM, a specially commissioned work by Korean-New Zealand artist Seung Yul Oh is the latest to occupy Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki's Edmiston North Sculpture Terrace.

Sixteen oversized, transparent PVC bubbles jostle for prime position and fill the sculpture terrace in this inflatable installation SOOM, which translates as breath in Korean.

'SOOM extends Oh's work with inflatables and explores his interest in expansion, growth and the possibility of explosion,' says Chartwell Trust spokesperson Sue Gardiner. 'There is an element of something playful, active and instantaneous – and ever so slightly threatening – with his work.'

The ongoing series of sculpture commissions by New Zealand artists is proudly supported by the Chartwell Trust. Previous artists in the series include; Kate Newby, Sriwhana Spong, James Oram and most recently, Mladen Bizumic.
