Monster Field: Surreal by Nature

 —

exhibition Details

During the 1930s an atmosphere of disquiet surfaced in the work of artists who merged the poetic and visionary sensibilities of Romantic landscape traditions with the Surrealists' interest in symbolic forms and found objects.

Monster Field: Surreal by Nature considers the shared interests of a selection of mainly New Zealand and British artists, and explores the way they folded together a sensitivity to nature, the landscape and history in imaginative and expressive ways. See the way bones, trees and stones take on new roles, evoking the unseen forces and mysterious qualities of a once familiar land, in this mesmerising exhibition of painting, photography and place.
