Framing the Past: Five Centuries of European Painting

 —

exhibition Details

Framing the past celebrates European art from the 13th century to approximately 1700, in what is a series of conversations between particular periods, styles and genres. These include religious paintings, landscape, portraits and scenes of everyday life.

Styles of painting may change across time yet the human need to reflect on the world in which one lives remains a constant. Rather than being trapped in time or place, an ongoing discussion on the meanings and relevance of particular works of art remains fluid, being renewed and revitalised through each viewer's eye, understanding, and experience. So while we would need to refer to history texts to discover what these works meant to viewers at the time of their production, we are free to closely observe each work and find our own meanings within it.
