The hugely popular exhibition Brian Brake: Lens on the world begins its extensive tour to eight New Zealand galleries this June at the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki.

Director Chris Saines says the exhibition, developed and curated by Te Papa, is 'a truly outstanding exhibition by one of New Zealand's most internationally acclaimed photographers'.

'This will be the last temporary exhibition to be shown at the NEW Gallery, prior to the re-opening of our developed building later this year. Its timing, coincident with the Auckland Photography Festival, could simply not be better. I know that Aucklanders will warmly embrace the opportunity to see the extraordinary work of one of the great photo-essayists of our time. And it's free!'

The exhibition features more than 165 superb photographic reproductions from Te Papa's permanent art collection, and is the first comprehensive retrospective exhibition of this notable Magnum photographer's work, spanning his forty-year career.

Photographic works on display include images from Brake's 'Monsoon' essay on India; those he was invited to take in 1950s Communist China and Soviet Russia; Roman and Egyptian ruins as they were in the 1960s; candid shots of celebrities such as Pablo Picasso, Robert Kennedy, Queen Elizabeth, and the Dalai Lama; promotion work undertaken for Air New Zealand and Tourism New Zealand in the 1970s and 1980s; and groundbreaking work with craft objects and taonga Maori.

Brian Brake: Lens on the world gives an unprecedented insight into Brake's life and his view of the world. As well as prints, the exhibition includes images displayed in digital presentations, and examples of magazines in which Brake's work appeared.
