exhibition Details

The archives in this display chart the development of the Gallery’s art collection, from the foundational collections of James Tannock Mackelvie and Sir George Grey in the 19th century. The Gallery has continued to benefit from philanthropy, and the archives demonstrate how this has taken place, from the acquisition of the Partridge Collection of portraits of Māori with the help of the public, through to the generosity of individuals that has enabled us to exhibit the Auburn, Chartwell, and Robertson collections. Groups aligned with the Gallery, such as the Associates (now Members) and the Patrons have also long shown support through acquisitions.

Including objects once owned by them, this display also shows how archives can vividly connect us with artists’ lives and their artworks.

Several of the archives on display here are featured in the new book, The Collection Te Kohinga, which illustrates over 220 important and beloved artworks in the Gallery’s collection.
