event Details

SOLD OUT - Seats for the Drop-in Drawing have reached capacity but you are more than welcome to attend the beautiful performance.

Join us for a special edition of our Friday Lates Drop-in Drawing with a performance by improvised music duo Hermione Johnson (prepared piano) and Simon Allen (percussion).

Book for this free live performance during which drawing tutor Abbey Lyman will guide you through exercises that will capture movement and help you respond to sound through sketching, gestural drawing and mark-making.

Hermione Johnson graduated from Auckland University with a performance piano degree in the 90s. Since then, she has developed her practice as an improviser and composer through the exploration of timbrel colour and play. Her improvisations at the piano make use of chopsticks and blutak to alter and extend the sonority of the instrument, evoking gamelan and bowed instruments. Hermione's latest solo piano album 'Tremble' was named one of 2020's 'best solo recordings' by New York City Jazz Record: https://relativepitchrecords.bandcamp.com/album/tremble

Simon Allen is a UK composer / percussionist, improvisor and interpreter of experimental music. His recent works variously incorporate film, projected text and British Sign Language. His multi-media work Resonance At The Still Point Of Change [2012] for instruments, voices, multi-screen projection and lights was commissioned for the Cultural Olympiad. Simon has a long association playing Feldman with pianist John Tilbury and can be heard in recordings with Apartment House, Skogen, Ensemble Grizzana and The Dangerous Kitchen amongst others. A recent solo album Te Henga Weather is available on bandcamp, find the link here: https://simonallen1.bandcamp.com/releases
