Event Details
In this unmissable series of free, live music events, three musicians from Aotearoa and beyond will perform at the Gallery.
Sit back, relax, or have an energised boogie in our beautiful sun-drenched Atrium as you listen to soulful alt-rock, dreamy chamber-pop and high-energy 80s bop inspired by Light from Tate: 1700s to Now.
These events will run across three Sundays: Sunday 30 April (Finn Andrews, SOLD OUT), Sunday 21 May (Peter Baecker, SOLD OUT) and Sunday 25 June (Mali Mali).
Keep your eyes peeled as we release more details – you don’t want to miss any of these Sundays. We can barely contain our excitement!

The lineup

Sun 25 June | 2–3pm | Mali Mali
Enjoy a dreamy Sunday afternoon at the Gallery listening to the ambient chamber-pop of Mali Mali (Ben Tolich) for our final Light from Tate Music of the Month performance.
Compared varyingly to the likes of Don McGlashan or Leonard Cohen, as well as more sonically adventurous homegrown acts such as Pumice and Alastair Galbraith, Mali Mali’s sweeping ambient guitar melodies, confessional lyricism and lush atmospheric ambience take listeners on a soulful journey through time and across undulating terrain.
Sit back, relax, and delight in the play of light as Mali Mali’s music ripples and radiates throughout Gallery’s glass-filled atrium.

SOLD OUT | Sun 21 May | 2–3pm | Peter Baecker
Dressed head to toe in a silver suit, with a mohawk hairdo and energy to burn, performance artist, DJ and dancer Peter Baecker travels the world with his 80s mobile disco, setting up anywhere from sweaty Berlin clubs to a mall in Sydney, to ... Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki!
In this one-of-a-kind free event, Baecker will respond to the exhibition Light from Tate: 1700s to Now. Expect shimmering lycra, neon glow and unadulterated enthusiasm for all things 80s. Get swept up in the pure joy of 80s pop as rainbow rays bounce off this aerobic artiste like a human mirror ball!
Bring your dancing shoes, bring the kids, bring grandma – because everyone loves to dance the day away!
This is the second event in our Music of the Month series, an unmissable programme of three, free, live music events at the Gallery. We’ll be announcing the third event soon – make sure you don’t miss it!

SOLD OUT | Sun 30 April | 2–3pm | Finn Andrews
We are delighted to welcome Finn Andrews to perform a very special solo concert for us as part of the ongoing Music of the Month series.
Could there be a more appropriate musician to accompany the exhibition Light from Tate: 1700s to Now than The Veils frontman Finn Andrews?
Fresh from releasing a double album called ...And Out of the Void Came Love, with lyrics that gaze into the darkness like the velvety depths of Anish Kapoor's sculpture, and which grapple with glorious but apocalyptic scenes not a million miles from the visionary, volcanic scenes painted by John Martin, Finn and his band boldly dare to go where most angels fear to tread, and in doing so ultimately find the light the cracks let in.
