In 2003, textile and dress historian Angela Lassig brought the exhibition Japonism in Fashion, initiated and developed by the Kyoto Costume Institute in 1989, to Te Papa Tongarewa and Christchurch Art Gallery. Kintsugi (or Kintsukuroi) is the Japanese art of repairing broken objects. Loosely translating to ‘golden joinery’, kintsugi values breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, using lacquer and powdered metal to make visible repairs.
