‘Alfa Romeo is honoured to be selected by Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, New Zealand’s largest and most inspiring visual arts experience, to work with them to share the excitement and passion that art in all its forms is able to inspire’, says David Smitherman, Chief Executive Officer of Alfa Romeo in New Zealand. ‘Alfa Romeo brings with it a unique artistic and styling heritage that we believe is an ideal fit with the Gallery and we look forward to sharing Alfa Romeo’s own works of art.’
The partnership between the Italian car marque and the Gallery began last year with Alfa Romeo’s proud support of the Open Lates programme for major touring exhibition, The Corsini Collection: A Window on Renaissance Florence, which brought paintings by Botticelli, Caravaggio and more direct from the walls of a private Italian palace to Auckland Art Gallery. This year, the partnership is strengthened further with the delivery of a liveried Alfa Romeo Stelvio for the Gallery’s use in its activities to connect art with people by reaching out to artists, partners, and cultural and community groups spread out across Auckland and beyond.

Leading fashion designer and cultural icon Karen Walker has teamed up with Auckland Art Gallery to create a range of collectable accessories based on the works of Frances Hodgkins, one of the early 20th-century’s trailblazers.
In celebration of the forthcoming major exhibition, Frances Hodgkins: European Journeys, Karen was given exclusive access to our extensive collection of Hodgkins’ artwork. From these paintings, Karen has produced exclusive travel-inspired pieces that reflect the artist’s nomadic and adventurous life.
‘Frances Hodgkins was the original “Runaway Girl”,’ Karen says. ‘Her life was full of purpose, adventure and independence. Our work has always been inspired by strong female stories and women with outsider points of view and adventurous spirits.’

The University of Auckland Public Programmes offers access to the University’s knowledge and research, and encourages the two-way flow of ideas between the university and its many communities. People from these communities work in partnership with academics from the university, practitioners and organisations to develop and deliver short courses, seminars, study tours and public lectures.
‘Auckland Art Gallery provides many learning opportunities for those enrolled in Public Programmes at the University of Auckland. In recent years, the Body Laid Bare exhibition from Tate allowed a full experience of artworks displayed in the gallery environment, in conjunction with classroom-based lectures. Nothing can substitute the first-hand experience of an artwork and a digital representation is only a preparation for seeing the art itself. That is why our partnership with Auckland Art Gallery is so beneficial for expanding horizons in life-long learning.’ Morgan Harnett, Relationship Manager – Event Services
