He Rose Again is a rare example of a full-length figure painting by the late Sāmoan artist Teuane Tibbo. While simplified human figures often appear in her vibrant ‘village scenes’, she seldom made figures the central focus of a composition. The only other known work of this kind is Self-Portrait in the Garden (1965, NGA, Canberra), which portrays Tibbo herself rendered with careful attention to the pattern of her dress and surrounding flora. Nor was Tibbo known to recreate classical religious scenes. He Rose Again does both.
In this painting, Tibbo draws on the Gospel of John (20:11–17), where Jesus appears to Mary Magdalene in the garden after he arises from the tomb. This moment marks Jesus’ first appearance following his resurrection, and it's Mary — not one of the male disciples — who first encounters the risen Christ. Mistaking him for the gardener at first, she recognizes him only when he says her name. This deeply intimate moment is central to the resurrection narrative, and it positions Mary as the first witness to the risen Jesus — a role that has led her to be called the “apostle to the apostles” in Christian tradition. Here, Jesus is the focal point of the composition, standing in the centre and dressed in white, with his gaze and left hand raised. Mary wears a white cloak, her brown hair flowing down her back. She kneels with her eyes fixed on Jesus and her right hand raised, offering flowers to Jesus. On the ground in front of her is a vase.
On the left, a brown mound-form resembles a tomb from which a tree sprouts white and pink flowers while the right features mountain forms. Painted in broad, impasto strokes, Tibbo transforms a biblical encounter into a scene uniquely shaped by her visual style and cultural perspective.
