Gary Underwood, Samantha Groves and Jaime Laing, Charlotte Street, Newton, Auckland by Gary Baigent

Artwork Detail

During the 1960s and early 1970s, Gary Baigent was one of New Zealand's most inventive photographers. He looked closely at how people personally relate to each other. Moving easily from urban to rural environs, Baigent practised a diary-like way of seeing. His camera tells visual stories about contemporary life.

Here, the people are obviously close friends and are looked at in a entirely familiar manner. The image has all the seemingly casual, but decisively controlled, appearance of a film-still from such a staunch movie as Blow Up (1966). (New Visions, 2001)
