"Naturalistic repetition, symmetry must be excluded" (Chakra 3)

Stephen Bambury’s paintings operate in the wake of

the avant-garde. The cross in “Naturalistic Repetition, Symmetry Must Be Excluded” evokes death – perhaps the crucifixion of modernism – yet it simultaneously represents potential resurrection. Bambury’s painting stacks seven of Kazimir Malevich’s crosses vertically. These relate to the seven energy chakras that run along the human spine, which are arranged in a hierarchy from base to crown. Rāja yoga holds that this enables spiritual energy to flow through the spine. Bambury’s paintings touch on a diversity of art philosophies, histories and technologies; his use of Malevich’s crosses relates to the Eastern transcendental philosophies thought to have inspired the Russian painter and theoretician.
