Painting by Jean Horsley

Artwork Detail

Jean Horsley trained at London’s Chelsea School of Art in the 1930s, later moving to New York, where she acquired knowledge of Abstract Expressionism. Later, she modestly described herself as a ‘Sunday painter . . . like thousands of New Zealanders.’

In this painting, Horsley transforms nature into a series of textured intertwining shapes. All the colours are harmonised as she creates a sense of white canvas sails moving across the Auckland harbour.
