Although preferring mythological themes to stories from the Bible, the notion of a mortal tackling a monstrous warrior [Samuel 1: ch. 17, verse 49] obviously proved most satisfying to Fuseli. The artist has reinforced the dynamic struggle between the duo with the diagonal lines of the standard and spears of the charioteers in the background. (Monsters and Maidens, 2004)
