Constant Permeke

Winter Landscape

Winter Landscape by Constant Permeke

Artwork Detail

The vigorous broad palette knife technique used in this painting evocatively suggests the fall of moonlight on the snowy ground cover. Belgian artist Constant Permeke was associated with the Flemish Expressionists throughout much of his career, although his work is regarded as highly individual. He probably produced this picture after 1929, when he moved to the village of Jabbeke and turned his focus to the local landscape. (From Dusk till Dawn, 2002)
