Three heads

Rouault learnt from his teacher Gustave Moreau a healthy scepticism towards art as a mirror of nature, as found in Realism and Impressionism. Throughout his career he focused primarily on the human form, although his tendency to depict the ugly, wretched and shameful brought criticism from the public. Once again, it was Vollard's championing of his work that brought some sort of financial security.
