Philip Peacocke
Pop Shot Poster
Artwork Detail
Phil Peacocke’s Pop Shot Posters of 1981 and 1982 were produced for Closet Artists Gallery. This gallery was run by Ray Castle as a venue where visual and performing artists could gather and present new work.
Closet Artists Gallery had a policy of producing the most innovative posters at a time when no Gallery in Auckland was using paste-up posters to promote projects.
The Pop Shop Posters are amongst the more innovative posters of Auckland’s musicians of the early 1980s. Looking back it is apparent that Philip Peacocke invited the key local musicians to participate in a theatrical tableaux.
The posters involved making individual black and white portraits of the musicians and then creating a clear-cut large scale image that incorporated numerous figures; all of whom were asked to present themselves in stylised poses.
