John McDermott (1956- ) was commissioned by the Auckland Art Gallery to take this photograph of the New Zealand painter, Gretchen Albrecht, for the catalogue that accompanied the Gallery's 2002 exhibition catalogue, Gretchen Albrecht Illuminations. McDermott is an Auckland-based documentary photographer whose work, typically of New Zealanders, has been published widely.
