Louis John Steele
Louis John Steele Archive

Artwork Detail
Louis John Steele (1843-1918) was born in England and classically trained in Europe. He arrived in Auckland c.1886 and as well as being a painter and an etcher, he was a teacher. Steele taught C.F. Goldie and they collaborated on a small number of works. This scrapbook consists of drawings, some loose, ephemera and newspaper clippings announcing Steele's exhibitions and including reviews of his work. In addition there are separate prints and drawings (circa 40), some possibly by Steele and others bought from his estate. A photographic portrait of Steele completes the archive.
