Waitangi, on the western shore of the Bay of Islands, was the site of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi between representatives of Māori and the Crown in 1840. This imagined reconstruction of the Māori welcome to Lieutenant Hobson for the signing is one of a series painted by Captain Clayton, of important colonial events such as the arrival of the first settler ships at Auckland and Wellington.
