Grace Joel

Grace Joel was one of the earliest New Zealand woman painters to gain an international reputation. Like Frances Hodgkins, she was trained by Girolamo Nerli in Dunedin and she studied at the National Gallery School in Melbourne. In 1901 she enrolled at the Academy Julian in Paris and later set up a painting studio in London. Her paintings gained much favour and she showed at the Royal Academy, Scottish Academy and Paris Salon. Her paintings of women and girls are amongst her most distinguished work.
